In this talk we will motivate and explain the Chern-Simons theory which is related to topology and Geometry of Smooth manifolds. This has applications in Mathematical Physics and Number theory. We will sketch certain constructions of invariants introduced by Chern, Cheeger and Simons around 50n years back.
